Six hotels where the building itself is the reason to look. A thirteenth-century castle, a cliff terrace, a steel-wrapped tower, a slab on legs, rooms cut into volcanic rock and a timber house on a ridge.

What decides the order here is not age or style. It is the split between what the structure does on its own and what people keep doing for it. A gallery hung in a lobby does not get a hotel into this section.

what holds itself up

The walls are thick stone set on solid ground, and they carry their own weight without help. Lake water sits below the terraces, so the ground drains away from the building. Mature woodland around the estate breaks the wind long before it reaches the windows.

what has to be kept going

Old stone takes water in, so pointing, roofs and gutters are checked and made good on a rolling cycle. Interiors added in later centuries need heating and air handled through a building that was never planned for either. Parkland, trees and lawns are maintained by hand through the Irish growing season.

what holds itself up

The cliff carries the building, and each floor steps back so every terrace has open sky above it. Rooms face the sea, which means daylight arrives from one direction and needs no borrowing from a light well. Rain runs straight off the rock and away from the walls.

what has to be kept going

Salt air reaches every outside surface here, so glass, metal and white render are cleaned and renewed far more often than inland. The path down to the shore is cut into rock and needs clearing after storms. Lifts and pumps move people and water up a slope no corridor can flatten.

The coast road is narrow and slow in summer, so allow far more travel time than the distance suggests.

what holds itself up

The steel frame stands outside the glass and carries the tower, which leaves the floors clear of heavy internal structure. Height puts most rooms above the noise of the beach road. Facing the water, the building takes its daylight from an open horizon that nothing nearby blocks.

what has to be kept going

Exposed steel on a coast has to be inspected and repainted, section by section, for as long as the tower stands. A full glass skin facing the Mediterranean is washed from cradles that run the height of the building. Sun on that much glazing keeps the cooling plant working through the long Catalan summer.

The tower sits in the Port Olímpic district, a good walk from the old centre, so check your route in advance.

The legs carry the building clear of the park, so the ground below stays public and open. Full-height glazing means every room borrows daylight from the street and the river without any internal light shaft. The concrete frame needs no help to hold its own shape.

what has to be kept going

Glass this exposed is washed from above on a schedule the weather keeps interrupting. West light over the Hudson loads the cooling system every summer afternoon, and heating works hard against the same glass in winter. Traffic on the streets below sends grit up the facade all year.

Rooms are set into the volcanic slope, so rock on three sides keeps the temperature steady without any help. White lime surfaces throw back the Aegean sun instead of storing it. Because the hillside falls away west, every terrace looks over open water and needs no screening.

Lime coatings on the caldera are repainted season after season, because sun and salt strip them back. Everything arriving or leaving moves by stair or by hand, from linen to building material. Water is a scarce island resource, so supply and storage are managed rather than assumed.

what holds itself up

The long low form sits along the ridge, with earth banked against one side and glazing on the other. Larch cladding weathers to grey and is meant to. Deep eaves put the summer sun off the glass while letting the lower winter sun reach the rooms.

what has to be kept going

No road serves the site, so every delivery and every departure depends on the cable car running. Mountain weather decides when that happens. Snow is cleared from terraces and paths by hand through winter, and the timber skin is inspected where sun and ice work on it hardest.
