ice hotels, four of them

Four winter buildings in Norway, Finland and Quebec. Snow walls, carved vaults, glass domes and sawn ice, each of them standing for one season and then gone.

This is the clearest case the guide has. Frozen material carries itself perfectly while the air stays cold, and everything else - the season, the machines, the crews - is the work that keeps it standing. A heated lodge with an ice bar is not in this section.

15 · Kirkenes, Norway

snowhotel kirkenes

the short of it

a snow building beside the fjord at Kirkenes, standing next to cabins that stay up all year

what holds itself up

This far north the winter cold is the structure: packed snow holds its shape because the outside air keeps it frozen. Thick snow walls sit still at around freezing whatever the wind does outside. The permanent cabins alongside carry the plumbing, heating and everything snow cannot.

what has to be kept going

Where the season is not cold enough on its own, refrigeration does the holding, and it runs continuously. Snow surfaces are shaped, dressed and repaired as they move. Guests sleep in thermal bags and wash in the heated buildings, so bedding, transfers and warm space are organised around every night.

one thing to sort out

Kirkenes sits close to the Russian border and far from anywhere else, so book flights before rooms.

16 · Ivalo, Finland

aurora village ivalo

the short of it

glass igloos and snow structures on a Lapland hillside, rebuilt for each winter season

what holds itself up

The site faces away from the village lights, so the dark sky above it is a property of the location rather than something installed. Glass domes hold their own heat with the cold pressing evenly on every side. Snow around the bases packs itself in as winter goes on.

what has to be kept going

A dome only works as a window if the glass stays clear, so snow and frost are removed from it through the night. Heating runs constantly against an outside temperature far below freezing. The snow parts of the village are built again at the start of every season.

one thing to sort out

Clear skies cannot be booked, so give yourself several nights rather than one.

17 · Lainio, near Ylläs, Finland

snowvillage ylläs

the short of it

a snow village with a hotel wing, cut and built again from scratch every winter

what holds itself up

Once the vaults are packed and shaped, snow carries itself, and the Finnish winter keeps the whole village at the temperature it needs. Rooms have no windows, so nothing depends on the sun. Thick walls hold the inside steady while the outside swings far colder.

what has to be kept going

Nothing here survives the spring, so the village is designed, blown, carved and finished again from the first cold weeks. Every wall, bar and carved surface is new work each year. Once open, the snow is watched as it settles, and lighting inside it is set so the ice is not warmed.

one thing to sort out

The village opens only for part of the winter, so confirm the season's dates before travelling.

18 · Saint-Gabriel-de-Valcartier, Québec, Canada

hôtel de glace valcartier

the short of it

an ice building assembled again each winter beside a permanent resort north of Québec City

what holds itself up

Ice and packed snow arches carry their own load once the forms come away, and the Québec winter holds them there. The permanent resort next door provides warm rooms, water and services, so the ice building carries none of that. Interior temperature stays near freezing by itself.

what has to be kept going

Each winter the whole thing is drawn, formed and built again, then taken down when it melts. Warm spells are the risk the schedule is written around. Ice blocks and snow surfaces are cut, fitted and dressed by crews, and guests are moved between the ice rooms and heated buildings every night.

one thing to sort out

The ice building is a winter-only structure, so check the opening dates for the season you want.

Work that keeps a building running is part of how it was designed, not a mark against it. Everything written here is our own wording of published material, and the month printed under a pair is the month we last read that material through.
